Historically, this lace-like embroidery was used to adorn the short kebaya ('puah teng teh'), worn by the Straits-born Chinese women in Penang, Melaka & Singapore. They are called Peranakan Nyonyas because although they are Chinese, they have assimilated into Malay culture in terms of clothing, language & food. Melaka Nyonyas are mainly descendants from inter-marriages between Malay & Chinese (at the time when Admiral Cheng Ho & Princess Hang Li Po from China visited the Sultan of Melaka).

Now, the Kerawang embroidery is currently seeing a revival & evolving into standard day & evening wear among modern Malay women. You mainly see it on the baju kurung, kebaya labuh & sarong and tudung (Islamic head scraf).

Also used to decorate household accessories like cushions, table mats & table cloths.
